The natural environment of Fremont, Union City and Newark — like the rest of the Bay Area — is under intense developmental pressure. Rapid growth imperils habitats, from the hills to the Bay itself.

Founded in 1971, the Tri-City Ecology Center (TCEC) is your local leader in advocating sound environmental policies that preserve and maintain unique natural resources, clean air, clean water, and a high quality of life.

Please join us in protecting our environment!

Join the Tri-City Ecology Center Climate Challenge and take climate action from home!

Did you know that 40% of US emissions come from 5 basic household activities (transportation, home heating fuels, electricity, food, and waste)? And now there are affordable solutions for each of these activities that can greatly reduce our carbon footprint, and even save us thousands of dollars!

Join the TCEC Climate Challenge today! It’s easy – all you have to do is:

  1. Complete your “energy profile” to learn about your household’s carbon footprint.
  2. Browse the 90 climate-friendly and sustainable actions and select a few to start seeing big cost and resource savings!
  3. Celebrate that you’ve helped to protect our air, water, and our future.

Why wait: Join today to start fighting climate change in your own home. We are working to have 100 households join and take 3 actions each by Earth Day to reduce CO2 by over 100 tons!

Urban Forest Friends

Urban Forest Friends is a branch of the Tri-City Ecology Center, and was founded in January 2019. We advocate for a strong, vibrant Urban Forest Program for the Tri-Cities, and work closely with the City of Fremont and City of Newark as they develop their Urban Forest Programs. We inspire and support our community to come together to plant and care for trees.

Growing trees where people need them most:

  • In our city parks
  • In our neighborhoods
  • In our schools

For carbon sequestration, beauty, and the benefit of the people and the environment.

Urban Foresters:

  • Plant and maintain trees
  • Support tree preservation
  • Educate and promote the many benefits of trees through citizen volunteer training

How greening our cities can reduce heat stress

Heat is a dangerous and currently the most deadly extreme weather phenomenon according to experts. It can lead to heat stress which limits bodily functioning including your body being unable to regulate its own temperature.

As the planet warms, 175 million new people are vulnerable to rising temperatures and the impacts of heat stress and cities are heating up twice as fast as the rest of the planet.

Nature can be critical in regulating heat and in providing a cooling effect, and cities around the world are experimenting by using and expanding green spaces in urban areas.

Learn about our efforts in educational outreach

Tri-City Ecology Center considers environmental education as essential for the success of future generations.

Do something drastic, cut the plastic

We offer a variety of compostable products to our members, provided by World Centric, an environmentally conscious organization that creates compostable foodservice and packaging products. We are thankful that World Centric has again donated the cups and sippy lids used in our Lemonade Stand Fundraiser at the Fremont Festival of the Arts in 2024.
